Meadows are hugely important for our ecology because they provide a major source of food to a wide range of wildlife that is normally unable to thrive in other conditions. Sadly in Ireland alone, one third of our bees are now threatened with extinction. This is because the flower rich areas that bees need to survive have largely disappeared across the Irish landscape.
Rising awareness of the importance of urban meadows...
A 'wild' flower meadow is a lot more technical than what its name suggests; they are consciously designed to actively work as an engine of local biodiversity. The decline of our meadows and the negative impact that is having on our ecosystem is now widely acknowledged. This has led to an enormous push by communities and organisations to plant meadows in urban areas.
Meadows are now becoming a common sight on functionless grassy land that exists on civic amenity sites, similar to what our landscapes team installed below on the grounds of the Control Tower at Dublin Airport.
Choosing the right meadow for your space...
There are a few types of meadows that are suitable for community spaces such as parks and industrial estates. These types range from colourful wildflower meadows to shorter and longer grass meadows. Important factors to consider would be the aesthetic impact and how the community intend on using the space. Short cut grass meadows are generally more appealing in residential areas as they can be cut shorter during summer months when the community are more likely to use the area. Long grass meadows are generally not as visually appealing, but can really enhance a community area when paths have been cut through it.
Sometimes a combination of wildflower and grass meadows can be very beautiful in large green spaces and will have an abundance of biodiversity value.
Our commitment to the All Ireland Pollinator Plan
As supporters of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, we are firmly committed to the protection of biodiversity in Ireland. We understand the importance of our ecosystem and how we rely on it as individuals and as a community.
SAP has taken many positive steps in the past few years towards the protection of our environment. We have recently extended our business offering to include a wider range of biodiversity services such as wildflower meadows, roof gardens, living walls and insect hotels.
